Rumour has it Australia is working its way up the ranks to compete with Milan, New York, London and Paris to be one of the fashion capitals of the world. Although they've been hosting fashion weeks since 1996 Australia seems to be rising from the ashes and making a name for itself. Despite having faced controversy (what fashion weeks haven't?) and once being dubbed 'Fashion Weak' it appears they've carried on through and their work has paid off.
One large criticism faced is that they rely too heavily on star appearances like that of Dita Von Teese in 2007, pictured below. I'd say to become as big as the four aforementioned fashion weeks Australia need to consider letting go of star appeal, the likes of Anna Wintour and Alexandra Shulman aren't interested in DVT straddling a giant MAC lipstick, they are there for the fashion.
Australian Fashion Week is however renowned for featuring lesser known designers which I think is very much needed, how will we ever discover new talent if all we see is the same few designers each season.
I think Australia could be a great addition to the 4 (5) Fashion Weeks, we need to be across the Globe, what good is having 3 European fashion weeks and 1 American? There are 7 continents, (Ok, Antarctica aren't looking like they're gonna have a Fashion Week any time soon but it could happen, Winter's only getting colder) But 3 of the other 6 isn't half bad. What do you think? Do I have any Australian readers who want a say on this? I'd absolutely love to hear from you.
Love this woman!
